About 2 months ago I had a solar system installed on my roof. Almost immediately the neighborhood pigeons moved in and began nesting and generally making a mess under the panels. Not only that, they woke up my wife and I every Saturday and Sunday morning at 7 AM like clockwork with the pitter patter of their little claws and cooing. This had to stop! So, I installed an exclusion mesh around the open edges of the panels and then spikes on all the flat roof surfaces as well as the chimney and vents. This should give me some piece of mind as well as a few more hours of sleep on the weekends.

The male does not live very long to pose much of a threat anyway. Black widow spiders are excellent at hiding in areas that are rarely frequented. Bites often occur when someone is reaching into an area that they cannot see, like a poorly lit shelf, into a box or other secluded areas.

Many homeowners make the mistake of tackling termites on their own. There are many over the counter termite “solutions” that fail miserably every time. Termites are smart and will hide in areas of your home that you would not even think of looking. Over-the-counter termite products are nowhere strong enough to eliminate the presence of termites permanently. Homeowners waste hundreds of dollars on chemicals and tools that will ultimately let them down when it comes to removing termites. They can even make the termite problem worse as when termites are disturbed, they will often move to other hidden areas of your home and continue eating away at home’s structure.

          Mouse & Rat Prevention

You will always want to prevent rodents from invading your home. Prevention will greatly help your home from becoming less of a target and make it much easier to control any rodent invasion. Start your prevention program outside. Having a well groomed yard isn’t just to please HOA’s but also to help prevent many pests. Yard debris or even wood stack piles will bring rodents along with many other pests closer to your home. Clutter and debris create a feeding ground as well as provide shelter for a variety of rodents. By keeping your yard cleaned and bushes trimmed, you eliminate these so called resorts for rodents. Next, check the outside of your home. Look for cracks or spaces in windows or doorways where rodents can slip through. Mice have a unique ability to flatten their body, and can slip through a crack the width of a pencil. Your next challenge is sealing these entry points that rodents use. Rats will climb on roofs and slip through chimneys and attic vents too. These larger openings should be sealed with wire mesh to prevent rodents from crawling inside your home. Repair any leaky drains or pipes outside of the home as well. Providing unintended water sources, regardless of how good your other prevention methods are, will still invite rodents to come into your home. Finally, leave no discarded food in or outside your home. Make sure all food is properly contained in air tight sealed containers; something rodents won’t be able to chew through.

          Rodent Control

Once you have a rodent problem it is a lot more difficult to deal with. Of course make sure the inside of your home is cleaned and food is properly packed away from rodent access. Now you will need to look into bait, poisons and traps. There are many types of traps on today’s markets. There are live capture traps and life taking traps. Live capture is actually more popular than those designed to kill. Many homeowners don’t like the smell of a dead rodent in their home and would rather have a pest control company deal with the live rodent. Depending on the circumstances, you many even want to use baits or poisons. However it is strongly recommended to only use poisons if necessary. Often rodents die where homeowners can’t reach or even find them. That means you will have a rotting rodent somewhere in your home. You may want to

The oriental cockroach is a species of cockroach that is usually a shiny, reddish-black insect. They are also known as waterbugs as they prefer dark and moist places to hide. The adult will reach up to about one inch in length, which is quite large for a cockroach species. The interesting thing about oriental cockroaches is that the male can be distinguished from the female by their wings. The adult males have a three quarter length wing and the female lacks wings altogether. Even though the male has wings, they are not able to take flight.

How do Oriental Cockroaches Get in My House?

Oriental cockroaches enter your home in many ways, including through drain pipes or open drains, cracks in the foundation and holes in window screens etc. Cockroaches can even stroll in through an open door! In order to thrive, Oriental cockroaches need a place to hide as well as nearby food and water sources. They prefer warm places with a relatively high humidity. You can find Oriental cockroaches wherever there is moisture; like a damp basement, a garage or even in the washing machine. Oriental cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and can, therefore, be elusive in that a casual inspection of an infested dwelling during the day may show no signs of activity.

Are Oriental Cockroaches Dangerous – Do they Bite?

While oriental cockroaches do not bite or sting, they can be dangerous to people. These pests live their life around water and warm areas which mean they tend to have more bacteria on their body. They live near garbage cans, garbage disposals and in bathrooms. But that does not mean that they will stay in these warm and moist areas. They will venture out for food, and that means heading straight for your kitchen. The Oriental cockroach will walk over kitchen counters in search of food and can even crawl into cupboards and pantries into food that is not sealed properly. Just like any other species of cockroach, oriental cockroaches can also cause allergic reactions to people that suffer from asthma.

are the most popular flower planted by far, and for first-timers, there are a few steps that should be taken to ensure your roses look their best. It is important to consider location before you begin digging into the soil to plant your roses. Roses should be planted where they can receive at least five to six hours of full sunlight per day. Roses that are planted in areas that do not receive enough sunlight will slowly die off and possibly never fully bloom. When planting your roses it is also important to remember not to crowd them with other plants nearby. Be sure to keep your bare root roses in water until the moment you are ready to put them in the ground. Also be sure to wear proper gloves when planting roses, as they do have very sharp thorns that can pierce your skin. There are a handful of insects that will enjoy feasting on your roses if you do not take the proper steps to protect your plant.

are out with a vengeance. Mosquitoes can ruin a barbecue, picnic or outdoor sporting event in little to no time. As the outdoor temperature continues to increase, so does our internal body temperature, which in turn causes our bodies to cool down by perspiring. The human body produces over 340 chemical odors during perspiration. Mosquitoes are especially attracted to a chemical in our sweat called Octenol. Some people produce more of this chemical than other people. This explains why some of us are more susceptible to mosquito bites than others.

. The females need the protein in our blood to help her eggs grow and develop. Mosquitoes don’t actually have teeth; they bite with a long serrated mouthpiece called a proboscis. They use the proboscis to pierce the skin and locate a capillary. As the mosquito sucks blood with the first proboscis, a second proboscis pumps saliva containing a mild painkiller and an anti-coagulant. The majority of people bitten have a mild allergic reaction to this saliva which causes the area around the bite to swell and itch.

As soon as temperatures begin to rise, termites begin to swarm and flourish, making spring their busiest time of year. Once a termite colony successfully gains access to the inside of your home, they will chew through concrete, wood, carpeting, flooring and wallpaper twenty-four hours a day.
CRANE FLIES

If it seems like your home or yard has become infested with giant mosquitoes, don’t panic. You are probably dealing with a Crane Fly infestation that could be threatening to your landscape, but poses no threat to humans. It is not the adults who are the culprits, but their larvae that can damage vegetation in your yard. They can be very damaging to lawns and plants because they feed voraciously on plant material and leave visible brown marks wherever they roam.

Crane flies get their name for their disproportionately long legs. They have often been called “mosquito hawks” because of a widespread myth that Crane Flies eat mosquitoes, which they are actually incapable of doing. During warmer seasons of the year, crane flies can become an annoying and damaging pest throughout California. They tend to inhabit warmer and wetter environments such as woodlands, streams, and lawns.

Much like the mosquito, they are numerous around water deposits. Often, they can find their way into people’s homes and are attracted to light just like moths. In spite of not causing any damage, they can be irritating due to their swarming nature. If you have a crane fly infestation in your yard, initially you’ll notice mild plant and lawn damage in the form of brown spots. Over time, you will start to notice what looks like huge mosquitoes drifting around your property. If you do not take the proper steps to contain them, they could infiltrate your home in large numbers.

Honeybees are one of the most beneficial insects in the world. In America, honeybees are responsible for 80% of all insect pollination, pollinating about 1/3 of American agricultural crops. Honeybees often have to face extreme temperatures, infestations, and plant viruses, but they may now be facing a new plague.

A parasitic fly, called Apocephalus Borealis, has been laying eggs inside of common honeybees. These “zombie flies”, as they are sometimes called, turn the bees into unwilling hosts of the fly’s maggots which lead to the eventual slow and painful death of the honeybee. This process can take a few weeks and as it progresses the bee starts exhibiting odd behavior such as jerky flight, disorientation and abandoning the hive at night. Eventually, the maggots erupt from the host honeybees’ body. John Hafernik, a bee expert at San Francisco State University said, “It’s sort of a combination of zombies and aliens mixed together.”

Although scientists do not think there is a significant threat to honeybees at this time, infected “Zombees” have been found in California, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and recently in Vermont.

Regardless of what kind of bee they may be, spring time is quickly approaching and bee populations will become active again soon. If you have unwanted honeybees near your home or business, don’t hesitate to call

Black widow spiders have become a big problem recently in Woodland and Davis. Customers have reported seeing them inside and outside. Be aware that black widows like to hide so watch out for them when gardening, moving boxes, moving furniture, etc. It is important to gain control over black widows by using a professional pest control company like Woodland-Davis Termite & Pest Control, Inc. One egg sac can contain up to 300 offspring. Below is a video one of our technicians took with his phone showing him opening an egg sac and the hundreds of offspring inside.

BED BUG BREAKOUTS

Do you ever consider what bugs might be lurking unseen in your home? How about in your bed? Not only could bed bugs be lurking in your bed, they are also often found in the carpet, couches, and other furniture. Bed bugs infest homes for shelter and live off their host’s blood as their food supply. Yuck.

Infestations of bed bugs have increased substantially over the past decade, escalating in New York City alone from 500 reports of infestation in 2004 up to 10,000 in 2009! Increased international travel is often blamed for the rise in bed bug breakouts, and bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of, largely because they are hard to detect.

Outbreaks of bed bugs in California have also recently increased. They were found in disturbing locations, a Starbucks in Campbell and a Senior Center in Stockton, just within the past few months. According to

Aside from the difficulty of detecting bed bugs, a few bugs can create an infestation due to their rapid reproductive rate. Within a few months, you can go from having one or two bed bugs to literally thousands, which will undoubtedly spread throughout the whole home. The best solution for controlling bed bugs is to call a professional immediately to exterminate these pests.

Subterranean termite swarming activity in Davis, CA

In the past two days I have observed active subterranean termite swarmers in both Woodland and Davis. The picture above was taken in Davis in a 15 year old house. The mud tube was hidden behind the refrigerator and all of a sudden thousands of swarmers started crawling out from underneath. The homeowner sprayed them down with raid but there were still active swarmers coming out of the tube and workers inside the tube. The source of the infestation was a crack in the slab where the copper pipe comes through to supply water to the ice maker. Subterranean termites only need 1/32 of an inch to make their way into a home. As a temporary measure, I knocked down the tube and injected Premise foam into the wall void around the copper line. A more thorough treatment will be scheduled soon. That will require a few small holes to be drilled through the concrete slab so that we can inject Altriset termiticide into the soil below. When we are done, a rubber plug will be inserted into the hole and then the concrete patch will be applied over the plug. Finally, we glue down the linoleum which we punch out and save before drilling. You will be able to see the outline of the hole if you look closely, but fortunately, these will be hidden underneath the refrigerator.

If you have roses, chances are you have aphids. As soon as leafs and buds appear on your rose bushes you will see aphids on them practically overnight. The best way to control aphids in Woodland or Davis is to have Woodland-Davis Termite & Pest Control, Inc. perform a deep root injection of the chemical Criterion. Along with Criterion we also add a liquid fertilizer to stimulate the uptake of the chemical as well as plant growth and overall health. The two other big aphid attractants in our area are crepe myrtle trees and hackberry trees. For these, we do a bark injection of the chemical Imicide that is taken up into the tree immediately and goes to work killing aphids, white flies, scale, and many other sucking insects. Neither of these chemicals harms ladybugs or neighboring plants.

The best time to do the deep root injection is mid-January through mid-February. The bark injections are done in late February. Both offer season long control and include free call back service if the aphids re-appear.

Winter is the time of year that rodents look for a warmer place to live. They will chew their way through almost anything and that is not limited to just your house. Rats have been known to chew through radiator hoses and electrical wiring in cars parked inside the garage. A mouse can enter your home through a hole the size of a dime, and a rat through a hole the size of a quarter. If you are seeing droppings like those pictured above or are hearing scratching noises in the walls or attic, it may be time to call in the professionals at Woodland-Davis Termite & Pest Control, Inc. They also come out of the water to breed and hunt for food some of the time. This beetle can get up to two inches in length and are a little less than an inch wide. They have a glossy black shell with greenish accents while in the light. Because of the water beetle’s shell and size, it looks a lot like the Oriental cockroach. However, the antenna of the water beetle is very short. On the other hand, cockroaches have long antennas. The water beetle has three distinct sections similar to cockroaches. The water beetle’s body is much smoother. Their wings and shell cover their abdomen making it easier to tell the difference. The giant water beetle is actually a good bug to have around. are large black cockroaches that like dark wet and damp places. This leads to confusion with the water beetle because it also hangs out by water. The Oriental cockroach also shares some similar characteristics with water beetles. First of all, they are also big black bugs. However, they are about an inch in size. Their entire body is very dark brown or nearly black and sometimes they have a greasy shine to them. The females have heavier bodies than the males and have small wings that cover a portion of their back. Despite the wings, they are unable to fly. . They also carry diseases. Water beetles have no known disease, and most of the time you will only see a single beetle. More may be seen during the mating season. Oriental cockroaches dine on mostly rotting food and garbage. Therefore, they stay near garbage cans. When they do come into your home, they will eat anything. Cockroaches find papers and glue edible. When an infestation occurs, they will poop everywhere which causes a gross musty smell. The diseases they carry are far worse. This disease is bacterial which they carry on their body. The disease is spread when their body comes in contact with any kind of surface. If they come in contact with your kitchen eating surface or food this can make you and your family really sick.

Turkistan Cockroaches can range in size from 9/16” to 1 1/8” long, depending on sex, as well as coloring. Males are generally a reddish-brown color with pale or whitish lateral stripes, located on the ventral side of the wing base. The male’s wings will stretch over the abdomen. The females are dark brown, with whitish lateral dashes at the end of their wings. Their wings are noticeably shorter than the males, not covering the entire abdomen, but maybe only half.

Like most cockroaches, the Turkistan Cockroach is a threat with spreading disease and contaminating our water. They prefer water sources and can be found infesting water meters or sewers. Because of their fondness for the sewers, Turkistan Cockroach can easily spread various diseases, germs, bacteria, and illnesses by trekking over contaminated surfaces, and then transferring it to wherever they happen to walk. If these pests make your home their home, household plants might quickly be consumed by them.

Turkistan cockroach is commonly used to feed reptiles, and though they cannot fly, the males can jump but are not capable of climbing. The Turkestan cockroach can frequently be found in a variety of habitats such as semi-arid deserts, arid deserts, water meter boxes, compost piles, leaf litter, potted plants, sewer systems, and cracks in concrete walkways. Once these roaches reach adulthood, their lifespan is between 6 and 12 months. The females can lay 1-2 ootheca, or egg case, per month. Each ootheca contains 20-30 baby roaches. The ootheca is susceptible to drying out and will hatch in 2-6 weeks depending on temperature and humidity levels.
