Who says termites don't eat redwood?
Look down near the bottom of this tree and you will see a subterranean termite tube coming out of the soil and up this live redwood tree.
I took this picture in Davis California during swarming season on May 1st 2003.
I picked away part of the tube and observed both workers and alates (also known as swarmers).

People always ask me - "What do termite tubes look like?" Below is a picture I took in Davis with a classic example of a subterranean termite shelter tube. This one happened to be on a house with a raised foundation, but you will also find these tubes on a slab foundation.

Here is an extreme example of subterranean termite shelter tubes. These were found underneath a home in Davis.

This is where the tub drain penetrates the slab. Because the contractor pouring the slab does not know exactly where the tub will be set he frames a 12" to 20" box around the drain and does not pour concrete there. Many times the contractor does not go back and remove the wood form boards and the bat tub gets set right on top of this wood and soil! This gives termites a perfect place to start feeding and can eventually lead to them moving beyond the box and into the surrounding walls as was the case in this house.
When we suspect termites are entering your home from the tub drain we can create a small opening in the sheetrock opposite the head of the bath tub and shoot chemical down into the soil under the tub. The only time this does not work is when a stall shower or another bathtub is installed on the opposite wall.
